Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a type of blood cancer. In CML, the bone marrow produces too many immature white blood cells (WBCs), which are unable to fight infections. CML is caused by a genetic change between chromosomes 9 and 22 resulting an abnormal BCR-ABL1 fusion gene. Most of the people (more than 90%) are diagnosed in the early chronic phase.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs)

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are blood disorders that start in the bone marrow. MPNs are associated with an overproduction of some of the mature blood cell types (red blood cells, white blood cells and/or platelets). Myeloproliferative neoplasms are caused by acquired genetic mutations.

Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)

Myelodysplasia or myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of blood cancers, in which the bone marrow does not produce enough blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells and/or platelets) and higher risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Get the Best treatment for myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) in Vijayawada from Dr. Ravi Kiran Bobba

Types of MDS:

  1. Refractory anemia : This occurs when there aren't enough red blood cells
  2. Refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts : This involves a low red blood cell count and too much iron in the red blood cells.
  3. Refractory anemia with excess blasts : This involves too many blasts (up to 19% of the cells in the marrow) and not enough red blood cells. It may also affect white blood cells and platelets and have a higher risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
  4. Refractory anemia with excess blasts in transformation : This involves a large supply of blasts (up to 29% of the cells in the bone marrow).
  5. Refractory cytopenia with multilineage dysplasia : This occurs when there aren't enough of at least two types of blood cells. Less than 5% of the cells in the marrow are blasts.
  6. Del 5q MDS : This rare form of MDS causes a shortage of red blood cells. Less than 5% of the cells in the bone marrow are blasts.
  7. Unclassifiable MDS : This occurs when blast percentages are normal, but there's a shortage of one type of blood cell.

Symptoms:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Weakness
  3. Pallor
  4. Unexplained bruising or pinpoint spots on the skin
  5. Bleeding easily
